Delete your data
Last updated: 13 August 2026
This page explains how to have the data that Knopfpost stores about you deleted. The controller for the Knopfpost app is Stefanie Grewenig, Talheide 5, 21149 Hamburg, Germany, hallo@knopfpost.de.
How to request deletion
As the person who set up the household – any active administrator of it – you can delete your Knopfpost yourself at any time, right on the tablet you set up. No email and no request to us is required:
- On the tablet, open “Settings for grown-ups”. The device shows a code; send it as shown from your Knopfpost chat (WhatsApp or Telegram, whichever your family uses) – the admin view then opens on its own.
- In the admin view, tap “Delete Knopfpost”, then “Delete permanently”. A warning appears that the deletion is permanent.
- To confirm, you are asked to type your Knopfpost's exact name and confirm with “Yes, delete everything”. Any other reply cancels, and nothing is deleted.
The deletion immediately removes the household together with all associated stored data and server-side media; your Knopfpost chat stops responding afterwards. It is permanent and cannot be undone. You can only delete the Knopfpost set up on that tablet – never another family's.
If you no longer have access to the tablet or the chat, you can request deletion by email instead: write to hallo@knopfpost.de with the subject “Delete my data” and tell us the name of your Knopfpost household so we can identify it unambiguously. We then delete it together with all associated data and server-side media, and confirm the deletion by email.
What gets deleted
When a household is deleted, the following are permanently removed:
- stored messages and their photos, voice notes and videos;
- profile photos of senders;
- depending on which messenger is used, Telegram user and chat IDs or WhatsApp phone numbers, and display names, of administrators and senders;
- the household name, technical identifiers, tablet credentials, approval/revocation/setup status, and pairing and invite data.
Automatic deletion and retention
Even without a request, data is not kept as a permanent family archive:
- Message media and sender profile photos are generally deleted from the Knopfpost server seven days after playback completes.
- Messages not yet delivered to the tablet are deleted after 30 days at the latest.
- When a household is deleted, its data and server-side media are removed immediately.
- On the child's device, downloaded media sits in the app's private storage and is removed after the intended playback flow. If the optional media-archive setting a parent can enable is turned on, a copy may additionally remain in the device's local gallery, which the parent manages on the device themselves.
- We retain individual technical data only for as long as necessary for security, troubleshooting, or statutory retention obligations.
Content that senders submit via Telegram or WhatsApp is processed independently by that provider (Telegram or Meta, respectively). Historical messages may remain visible there even after Knopfpost no longer stores them; rights regarding that data may exist directly against Telegram or Meta.
